At MathsHub, our approach to primary school maths education is designed to build a strong foundation in both numeracy and problem-solving skills, setting students up for long-term success. Each session is thoughtfully structured to include thirty minutes focused on numeracy and another thirty minutes on problem-solving. This balanced structure supports students in mastering essential mathematical concepts while gaining confidence in interpreting complex problem-solving questions—skills that become crucial in VCE Maths assessments, where problem-solving forms a significant portion of the evaluation.
Recognising that each student’s journey is unique, we allow flexibility within this structure. If a student is working on a numeracy concept that they have covered the previous week, they are given additional time to focus on problem-solving. This emphasis on problem-solving ensures that students gradually develop a deep understanding and build confidence when approaching challenging questions.
We prioritise quality over quantity in our instruction, ensuring that students take the time to understand and work through questions thoroughly. Although our numeracy worksheets include suggested timings, we avoid enforcing strict time limits, as we’ve found that focusing too heavily on speed can detract from accuracy. Instead, our goal is to cultivate an environment where students develop the intuition to spot and correct careless mistakes, ultimately enhancing both their speed and precision through consistent practice.
Our teaching method also incorporates the Montessori approach, which enables students to progress at their own pace and in alignment with their learning needs. In our group sessions, students work on individualised tasks, but they also have the opportunity to listen to the teacher’s explanations on problems that may not directly relate to their current work. This passive exposure helps reinforce mathematical concepts, fosters curiosity, and provides students with additional insights that strengthen their understanding over time.
A unique feature of our programme is our in-house app, which captures every student’s progress in both numeracy and problem-solving areas. Based on their recorded progress, each student receives a personalised booklet for the following week, printed directly from the app. This ensures that each student’s learning experience is continually tailored to their specific needs, allowing them to address areas for improvement while advancing in their strengths.
